Stredocesky kraj, Czech Republic
Irrigated Land
Total area: 1500 ha
Soil
There are various soil types in different fields on the farm. Mostly light sandy soils without stones, variations of black earth with sand content, and loamy sandy soil. The fields are very flat, with a plow layer depth of 25 - 40 cm.
Market
This is an opportunity to capitalize on a shifting trend in the market: the increasing preference of customers and retail chains for local products has become apparent in recent years. However, Czech production of vegetables and potatoes is far from self-sufficient, the number of large producers is limited, and a lack of local products must be compensated by imports.
Import:
The farm is currently ranked 7th in the Czech Republic for carrots, 5th for celeriac, 10th for potatoes, and 5th for fresh cabbage, and sells to retail chains (Ahold, Schwarz Gruppe, REWE, Globus) through a farmer cooperative. Non-irrigated field crops include wheat, corn, rapeseed, and more.
Background
The company is the successor of a large cooperative farm. It owns an extensive underground irrigation network, originally designed to irrigate 1500 hectares of farmland, which was not used between 2000-2020. The farm grew common field crops such as wheat, corn, sunflower, and rapeseed. Under new management, the irrigation network has been renovated step by step over the past 5 years: equipped with new modern pumps, new fittings, valves, and hydrants, and provided with new surface irrigation machines from Bauer. During a joint venture program with a local farmer, the management and staff have learned to grow fresh products in the quality demanded by retail chains (potatoes, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, onions). Now that strong yields have been proven achievable, the time is ripe to scale up.
