Description:
Peony & rose hip nursery in Bulgaria with 33 ha of land, incl. 300 m2 production building and office.
Essem Ltd has been successfully growing peonies and rose hips since 2010. In spring, between 350,000 and 400,000 peonies are harvested and then transported to the Netherlands for direct sale to customers from to the auction in the Netherlands. From the auction in the Netherlands, peonies are shipped to all corners of the world.
In autumn, it is the turn of the rose hips. An average of 2,000,000 rose hips are then processed and sent to the Netherlands after harvesting and then sold in various places around the world.
Location:
Area: Essem Ltd is located in Koprivlen, Hadzhidimovo municipality, near the Greek border. The provincial town of Gotse Delchev is nearby. Bulgaria's most beautiful village, Delchevo, is close by. If you wish, we can help you get a residential property in Delchevo at a very attractive price.
Different varieties of peonies:
- Coral Sunset 100,000
- Duchess of Nemour 90,000

- Red Sarah Bernhardt 70,000
- Buckeyes Belle 5,000

The different varieties of Peonies were chosen deliberately because they ripen one after the other and can therefore be offered for sale in staggered quantities.

- All facilities have the necessary local permits.
Strong team:
Essem Ltd has been working for years with a permanent team of about 10 people. There are 2 operations managers who manage the day-to-day operations. There is a network to deploy additional resources during peak periods. There is also a permanent accountant who is also responsible for personnel administration. Because of years of experience, the local team does not need daily guidance. Guidance and expertise is needed only for non-daily issues. In addition:
- Agronomist: for pesticides and soil testing. In practice, the local agronomist's knowledge proves most effective, but it is occasionally supplemented by knowledge from the Netherlands, for instance by having soil or plant samples examined.
- In-house recruitment agency.
- 24-hour surveillance of the land.
- Interpreters.
- Lawyer.
- Beekeeper for pollination.
Partners in the Netherlands:
Essem Ltd. also has a good relationship with its partner Steenwijk Abbenes (Timo Steenwijk) for peony sales and with Joop Voorveld for rosehip sales. The partner for transport is Jan van Splunteren of Arusha Transport. A Dutchman at a Bulgarian transport company that has been used for years. And there is a strong relationship with the auction in the Netherlands Flora Holland.
A summary of all the strengths:
- In the start-up period from 2010 to 2019, extensive research was carried out into the possibilities of making the best use of soil type and climatic conditions. Soil samples were methodically and repeatedly examined and extensively tested with plants/flowers that thrive best in the available soil. We can richly provide you with information on this!
- Above all, low labour and other operating costs.
- Low taxes.
- Good climate compared to the Netherlands. It really is a beautiful area.
- Limited competition as there are relatively few new entrants to the market. For peonies, it takes 2 years and in the Netherlands 3 years before production starts. For rose hips, production starts after 4 years.
- Peonies and rose hips are suitable for storage and transport.
- Prices can be somewhat volatile, especially for peonies, but demand for both peonies and rose hips is stable and resilient.
- The company's risk is well diversified and business management is also controlled as it operates in two seasons. A spring with peonies and an autumn with rose hips.
- Fully own local network with staff and third-party services (lawyer, bookkeeper, accountant, agronomist).
- Ample supply of locally and flexibly available labour.
- Ample growth opportunities on existing land. Doubling revenues on own land is possible, with significant cost advantages due to economies of scale.
- Ample growth opportunities in the surrounding area through purchase of additional land.
